Stops crack propagation

The physics of compressive stress states "Cracks cannot propagate into or through a layer of compression unless the effective yield strength of the material is exceeded."

MetaLLife increases the effective yield strength of the tool steel from 30-40%.  This increase prevents crack propagation.

Thermal and tensile fatigue cracks that are too large to be closed by the temporary plastic flow of metal still have compression at both ends of the cracked area.  Applying the physics of the first statement, the cracking is arrested by the compression present at these locations.
