Manufacturing
In our last issue we called attention to the manufacturing crisis the United States is facing.  We encouraged recipients, at that time, to write letters to their Congressmen and Representatives.  Since February, there has been a tremendous groundswell from a grassroots organization SAM (Save American Manufacturing).  The organization started in IL by Bill Cermak of Pro Mold.  Bill saw a need to get organized.

SAM is a national organization concerned about the loss in all areas of manufacturing to non-domestic sources that is causing a rapid decline in the economic condition of the United States.
Since its founding on December 31st,
2002, SAM has grown to having its own domain and website where everyone in the United States can be reached via the web.

SAM ovhas collected over 2000 letters from concerned citizens across the United States and got the attention of the media, and various concerned government officials.  13 State chapters have already been started.  Rallies and meetings are planned for Illinois, Wisconsin and Massachusetts.

The SAM website is located at www.samnow.org.  There is an automatic redirection for those that type in www.samnow.com by mistake.

At the SAM site, you can sign up as a  supporter, start a  SAM State chapter, print out cards/stickers to hand out, send a photo of a product no longer being produced in the US, get a listing of your government representatives that support  American manufacturing and labor, read various PDF articles that support the concern of SAM and keep abreast of meetings and rallies scheduled in all the states.  Milwaukee's meeting/rally will be Wednesday May 21st 2003 at the Menomonee Falls Library.  In addition to hundreds of people concerned about their lost jobs and the economy, government officials, news media, and Washington representatives will be present.  We encourage those that can be present to attend.  SAM is presently collecting as many letters as possible to take to government representatives to illustrate the effect that the PNTR (Permanent Normal Trade Relations) with Communist China is having on small manufacturing and the future economy of the United States.  Normal is hardly the word for it.

A USCC report submitted to Congress last July 2002 graphically describes the threat that China poses not only to our economy but also the national security of this country.  It is also on our website, or you may simply click here to view it.

Steels
The May 2003 issue of NADCA's Die Casting Engineer Magazine features topics relating to die surface treatments.  Badger has an article titled "Major Advances in FNC".  We encourage those interested in learning more about our registered TherMaLL ifeÒ automated process to pick up a copy.  The benefits of combining it with MetaLL ifeÒ are discussed in detail.
DievarÒ
Uddeholm's new hot works steel for die casting dies is showing real promise in retarding heat checking.  At a new page on our website there is an article dealing with the specifics that must be considered when ThermaLLifeÒ processing this type of steel.  Due to its chromium matrix, it will nitride faster than normal or premium H-13 material.  You can read about this by clicking here.
