Locks Compressive Grain Boundaries

High heat normalizes stresses whether they be of a tensile or compressive nature.  Introduce diffusion at the same time and the pressured gases containing the diffusion atoms prevent the compressive grain structure from being normalized as heat alone will do.

Photo (b) at the right shows a resultant surface after TooLLife has been applied.  The higher dislocation density and higher diffusion concentration tends to lock in the compression as shown in the compression curve (A1).

Compare this surface diffusion structure with the photo below showing stratification of the diffusion zone and compound layer.  No compression below the zone surface is present.
